Identity Unknown

Identity Unknown

Forensic identification is a branch of forensic science that has played an increasingly significant role in crime solving over the past three decades. A body whose identity cannot be determined by next of kin is often confirmed by fingerprint, DNA, or dental records comparison. Presumptive identifications can result in false or incorrect conclusions, further compounding the tragedy of an already traumatic situation.

Killer Nashville

Killer Nashville

During the week of August 22-24, Nashvillians will have a chance to meet some very famous people. Country Music? Not this time. Mystery authors’ convention! That’s right! Didn’t know there was such a thing, huh?

On August 22, 2013, crime scene tape will go up at Nashville’s Five-Star Hutton Hotel, and hundreds of crime fiction readers and writers will converge to learn from and sometimes match wits with forensic anthropologists, dentists, psychologists, attorneys, and law enforcement professionals.

Missing Children Of Bedford County

Missing Children Of Bedford County

When the subject of missing persons comes up, people usually respond by saying ‘what a horrible thing it is, it must be tough going through something like that, I feel sorry for the family’. Those types of things are usually characterized by most of us as things that happen to other people. You might see it on the six o’clock news, but not something that you would ever think would happen to them.

A terrible house fire erupted quickly that totally consumed a 5000 square foot home in the Rover community of Bedford County, near Shelbyville, about 45 minutes southeast of Nashville last September. Mr. and Mrs. Leon and Molly McClaran who had been married for over 30 years had custody of two of their grandchildren, nine year old Chloe Leverette and seven year old Gage Daniel. When a passerby first reported the blaze, the entire house had already been consumed by the fire. Firefighters had to bring water in by truck since there were no fire hydrants nearby. Firefighters eventually set up a large plastic water trough near the home from which to draw water from.

Alleged Mobster Whitey Bulger Trial Loaded With Forensic Dental Testimony

Alleged Mobster Whitey Bulger Trial Loaded With Forensic Dental Testimony

I have reviewed the Whitey Bulger story in detail and find it fascinating. It reminds me of several gang type cases we have worked involving murders similar to this. The practice of extracting human teeth, decapitating the victim, or cutting their hands off to hide fingerprints of the decedent has been noticed in many cases over the years. The idea evidently originates from the premise that the murderer has read so much or watched so many ‘true crime’ type television programs, that they act out that behavior in the actual murder.

First Annual Walk of Death Golf Tourney

First Annual Walk of Death Golf Tourney

Throughout the years, one of the most influential mentors I have had is Dr. Richard Souviron, Chief Forensic Dentist for the Miami/Dade County Medical Examiner’s Office. You have seen him interviewed on 60 Minutes and other magazine/news programs. He has provided testimony (along with yours truly) for the West Memphis Three trial most recently. He is most well known for his testimony in the State of Florida vs. Ted Bundy, a landmark case in forensic identification. It is the first time a US citizen has been convicted and executed for a capital offense, where a human bitemark was the primary source of evidence.

Our friendship has continued over the years, including his OPPOSING testimony in the case State of Tennessee vs Castleman in 1985. It was the first time bitemark evidence had ever been allowed as admissible evidence in a Tennessee courtroom. This happened to be my first time EVER in a courtroom. Talk about David vs Goliath!!

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Even though you’d find it hard to believe, I am not employed by the Jackson Hole Visitor’s Bureau. It just happens to be one of the most beautiful places on earth! That’s why Karen and I have to make a regular trek out for our Rocky Mountain fix. Snuggled right up against an edge of Yellowstone National Park, this rugged little western town, carved right out of the 1800’s, boasts an elevation of up to 10,450 feet and population of much less. It serves as home to at least a few celebrities including but not limited to Harrison Ford, Sandra Bullock, Dick Cheney, and recognized trial lawyer Gerry Spence (remember the OJ trial coverage?).

Recognizing The Effects Of Post Traumatic Stress

Recognizing The Effects Of Post Traumatic Stress

Many of us have viewed the same photo over and over. The burned out shell of a 777 airliner who apparently made a serious error in judgment crashing its tail into the seawall on final approach into San Francisco just a few days ago. For the families of those that perished, the total fatalities might as well have been a million. Their loved ones are gone. Many others stared at the screen, wondering how on earth did so many individuals get out of the human inferno alive. For those of us who knew people who perished in the 9-11 attack, old wounds were reopened. Not the first time. Unfortunately, probably not the last time.

A Special Thanks To Trudy and Whit Clark

Well, it’s been a month now since the official launch of the Walk of Death book promotion. It’s been a fast and furious ride so far! What a special way to kick it off than to have special friends like Trudy and Whit Clark to host an event at their awesome real estate offices, Fridrich and Clark, in the Green Hills area. It proved to be a well received event for many of their realtor colleagues in the middle Tennessee area. Just a great chance to meet some of their friends and start the momentum rolling for the middle Tennessee promotion.

New Way to Meet Mystery Readers

New Way to Meet Mystery Readers

Funny thing happened on the way to the Boston airport. So cool that it deserves its own blog. We are checking our bags at the Southwest Airlines counter, Karen is lugging this 24x30 color poster of the Walk of Death book while I’m trying to set each suitcase on the little machine to see if it weighs over 50 lbs. I’m giving it the business (*&^%$#@) cause we’re having to shift around to fit the weight requirements. I took out a couple of extra WOD books out of one suitcase, set it up on the counter to transfer it (and its weight) to the next suitcase.

Hats Off To The 100TH Anniversary Of The American Dental Hygienists Association!

When the invitation to speak at this prestigious meeting arrived almost a year ago, I had no idea the magnitude of this honor. Of course most all dentists have dental hygienists, those professionals in charge of keeping your pearly whites completely white. But the 100th anniversary for ANYTHING is a big deal!

Boston Unplugged

Boston Unplugged

Having only visited Boston one other time in my life, I was really looking forward to refreshing my memory of the city’s layout. After checking into the Marriott Hotel Copley Place, my wife Karen and I wandered aimlessly down to Boylston Street. This street was world famous already, boasting the finish line of the 116th annual Boston Marathon. Now, it had gained additional notoriety, with the recent bombings during this year’s race.

Bonnaroo Music Festival Tragedy

When Nashville, Tennessee, is referred to as Music City, USA, there are some real reasons behind that claim. During the first two weeks of June each year, our fair city, and the surrounding counties extending down to Manchester, put on a show for just about any type of music lover. For the traditional country music fans there is the CMA festival, which packs LP Field, home of the Tennessee Titans, each night for a star studded spectacle second to none. Nearly 100,000 country fans from all over the world visit the mecca of country music, leaving at the end of the week with memories that will last forever.

Boston Is The Next Stop On The Book Train

Next stop on the book train will be Boston! How fortunate we were to land a speaking engagement at the American Dental Hygiene Association’s 100th anniversary meeting June 19-25, 2013 at the Hynes Convention Center. The program’s special theme is entitled: “100 Years of Dental Hygiene: Proud Past, Unlimited Future. When I heard a sampling of the other speakers on the program, I really appreciated our having the chance to participate in this elite group.

A Tribute To Ronnie Letellier

A Tribute To Ronnie Letellier

In the spring of 1965, or some time close to that, six guys got together to form a rock and roll band. It all started by forming a collaboration of guys who had managed to buy some new or used musical equipment, speakers, and microphones. My first love had always been the drums. Probably because my ultimate hero then was Ringo Starr. Every drummer or wannabe that was anybody wanted or tried to get Ludwig drums, Zildjian cymbals, especially if you could get it in black pearl. That was Ringo’s colors.
